Deities at the Pontus Euxinus

Museum of National History and Archeology Constanta

The exhibition “Deities at the Pontus Euxinus “, at the Museum of National History and Archeology Constanta, proposes an experiment of contemporary art built on a bridge that unites two worlds: that of the ancient civilization and the contemporary world. The connection that unfolds over a distance of two millennia invites us to investigate how the archaeological cultural heritage of Constanța can be viewed, understood and translated into the language of contemporary visual arts. The starting point of the exhibition is a free game of imagination and understanding of the sculptural heritage at the Museum of National History and Archeology in Constanța.

A rediscovery of the perfection of form from the ancient world has been transposed by artists through the prism of contemporary experiments. The participants in the experiment proposed their own vision on some architectural monuments from the Pontus Euxinus, ancient name of the Black Sea, such as protective deities of the city of Tomis-Fortuna and Pontos; main deities of the Greco-Roman pantheon: Bacchus, Cybele, Mercury, Isis, Aesculapius, Diana, Aphrodite; other Greco-Roman deities: Selene, the Graces, Hecate, the Dioscuri, Nemesis and other divinities outside the classical pantheon such as: the Thracian Knight, Mithras, the Serpent Glycon, etc.

Through ancient art, man can get closer to his origins and probe his deepest and most archaic identity thus, by trying to understand the culture of the peoples who lived in the past and through an inextinguishable thread, he comes to better understand the present and to project more clearly towards the future.
